THE CIVILISATION OF MAN - HAH!

What a civilisation we are part of. What heights we have reached. This civilisation that has spawned the wonders of science and taken man into space and onto the moon. This civilisation that has spawned electricity, personal travel, air travel, personal computers, flat-screen TVs, and tiny gadgets that are phone and music machine and television all in one.

This civilisation … that is still spawning barbarians. Barbarians who kill the good and the innocent in the name of religion.

That’s all I have to say at present about the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

Mrs N and I went to see The Golden Compass at our local cinema last night. It’s based on Northern Lights by Philip Pullman, part of His Dark Materials trilogy, which as well as being a fantastic adventure story also asks many questions about the role of religion in our lives.

As an adventure story the film was brilliant. As a thought-provoking piece it failed.

Which just goes to show – the power still lives with the written word on the page. And the keyboard is still mightier than the ak47. Which is why the assassin will go on killing. He hasn’t the intelligence to do otherwise.
