I have a proposal for Leap Year Day – possibly not the most romantic one of 2008.
I would like everybody to consider the role of the monarchy in the 21st century, in the light of yesterday’s news that Prince Harry has been in Afghanistan for 10 weeks fighting the Taliban.
The seemingly endless hours of airtime and reams of newsprint devoted to the secret posting of the Ginger One must have the parent of every squaddie out there frustrated if not fuming.
What about their sons and daughters? Is not every one of their lives worth the same as the Prince’s? Of course they are!
It’s such an obvious observation that the entire picture must surely be obvious, too. Our lives, the lives of the so-called ‘common people’ are worth every bit as much as every single life in the royal family, from the Queen downwards.
Ergo, why, in this enlightened age, are they still elevated so far above us? Why do they lead a life of such privilege?
No reason at all. Except perhaps as a tourist attraction. And what sort of reason is that?
Think about it. Do we really want to prolong this charade when the reign of Elizabeth II ends?
*If you don't hear from me for a few days it won't be because I'm explaining this heresy to the Special Branch (at least, I hope not) – I'm just having a little break.
