I always thought people who bought personalised car number plates were – let’s be polite – strange. Egocentric perhaps? Except the one who bought ID 10T.
I always thought Lewis Hamilton was a bright, feet-on-the-ground, unaffected young man for someone who’s had such a meteoric rise to fame.
I was wrong on the second count. The Formula One whizkid has just paid more than £200,000 for the number plate LEW 1S.
If I ever get to meet him – and who knows, he may one day join the I Love To Grow Runner Beans Association – I will be unable to resist asking him, ‘So, why did your Dad call you Lew-gap-one-ess?’
I almost succumbed to the egotism of a personalised number plate once, but I didn’t really have the dosh. And then Mrs N refused point-blank to change her name to GIT 01ME.
I think I’d had too much to drink.
